Minutes of Regular Meeting of Members
Coppell Amateur Radio Enthusiasts
Date: November 20, 2018
Location: William T Cozby Public Library, Coppell TX
The meeting was called to order by Darryl, KG5MDS, at 7:00 PM.
Parks On The Air Event
Darryl discussed the group’s Parks On The Air event at Ray Roberts State Park where three of us attended: Darryl, Jon N5JBS and Aaron K8AMH. Darryl was able to successfully activate the park, meaning the visit qualified for points, and Jon was able to contact his brother in Colorado. Aaron made his first HF contact as well.
The group will look into setting up other events in the new year as the weather improves.
In lieu of a Membership and Board meeting in December, the group will hold a small Christmas party at an area restaurant. Darryl asked for suggestions, one of which was Meat You Anywhere in Grapevine. After further discussion, we determined we should send out a survey and Aaron will work on this.
Membership and financial update
Aaron, K8AMH, provided an update regarding membership count and a high-level financial report.
In October the group paid $4.12 in expenses for PayPal transaction fees, and received $250 in income. $150 was from LegacyTexas as part of a promotion for opening the group’s account there, and $100 was from membership dues.
The Board held an off-site to put together a 2019 operating budget, and this was presented during the meeting. The Board budgeted for $2,700 in income and $2.540.90 in expenses. This budget will be reviewed and potentially approved in the Board meeting following the Membership meeting.
Filing Form 1023-EZ with the IRS was also discussed, including how the filing fee is $275 and that it would be quite some time, perhaps six months or longer, before we would receive a final determination from the IRS. Discussion on filing this form will be discussed at the Board meeting following this Membership meeting.
Jon, N5JBS, updated on the repeater project. The Fire Chief was contacted, and he requested meeting after the new year due to the holiday season.
David, KG5RDF, mentioned that the Lewisville club has offered the use of its VHF repeater for our group. This repeater is owned by the Denton group DCARA. David also offered some repeater equipment at a good price, and after discussion the Board determined it would pursue a Yaesu repeater. Yaesu is offering two models, and the Board is interested in purchasing a DR-2X repeater. Aaron will set up a repeater project fundraising web page, and any donations made through this web page will be dedicated to and can only be used for repeater and related equipment expenses and maintenance.
Tod, W35TR, mentioned that BridgeComm is holding a giveaway for a 220 repeater setup and encouraged trying to enter. Aaron has also been entering this giveaway. Also, Tod mentioned he has connections with the school district, and if there is a need to place the 440 repeater system somewhere other than the water tower, the football station or similar might be an option.
Volunteer Examiner educational discussion
Korky, KG5NNA, gave a presentation about on the process of becoming a Volunteer Examiner and how different coordination groups oversee VE programs. He also discussed how the program helped eliminate the need to travel to FCC offices to take tests.
With no other matters before the membership meeting, the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 PM.
